The Vibrant Life That Music Creates

Smells Like Teen Spirit -Nirvana, 1991, USA Mind Playing Tricks on Me -Geto Boys, 1991, USA     Music is something I believe we cannot live without in this world. Imagine a world where there is no music in it. Well, for me I simply can't since there is not one day I do not have some type of music playing in the background. Hopefully, you are the same way as me. Where music is so embedded in your life you cannot live without it. Although, if you can imagine a world without music think about how bleak that world is. From getting hype to go into the gym and workout or even just trying to change your mood. For me, without music, it would make these tasks a lot harder. Music can change a lot of lives daily that it makes our lives as vibrant as they can be.     Smells like teen spirit is one of those songs that can get me hyped up for the gym. With the iconic first three chords of the guitar to start the song. Can just get your blood pumping to get ready to start lifting. No matter wha

Explorations in Jamaican Music

Satisfy My Soul -Bob Marley & the Wailers, 1978 Running Away -Bob Marley & the Wailers, 1978      Jamaican music is one of the most influential in the world. Jamaica has 4 main different types of genres of music. Which are Ska, Calypso, Mento, and Reggae, but they also have genres that stem from their 4 main genres. An interesting fact about DJs and toasting, which is one of the genres that stems from reggae, is what created rapping in American culture. As you can see already Jamaican music has influenced American culture. America is not the only place that has been inspired by Jamaican music. Africa was inspired by reggae music in the 80s. Although the song "Africa Must Be Free by 1983" by Hugh Mundell was not written by an African artist. It still inspired many Africans to fight for freedom in their countries from slavery that was still happening at the time and even till this day. Jamaican music reaches people in all different ways. But mainly Jamaican music is s

Music and the Fictive Dream

"Come What May" - Ewan McGregor, Nicole Kidman, 2001     Moulin Rouge! is quite an interesting musical film in my opinion. I am not very fond of the movie but have a lot of memories of it. Since my mother would play this movie non-stop through my childhood. She thought I would love this movie since I was obsessed with star wars. So, she thought somehow that correlated I would love this movie since Ewan McGregor was the star of the movie. Never really understood her reasoning for that. But I actually really liked the music throughout the movie. The movie has a very unique aesthetic. That I have never really seen done by anyone else.      The entire movie is based during the bohemian revolution in France. Where writers lived an unconventional lifestyle to create a story.  The main character, Christain, in the movie is living that type of lifestyle. Where he eventually falls in love with a dancer, Satin, at the Moulin Rouge. He sings a song called " Come What May" t

Role of a Performer

Thriller , Micheal Jackson, 1982, USA Smooth Criminal , Micheal Jackson, 1988, USA     Micheal Jackson's entire life has been revolved around music. He joined the Jackson 5 when he was 6 years old. He first started out being a backup musician for the musical group. Shortly after, he started sharing lead vocals with his brother Jermaine. Micheal was an instant sensation in America. When people came to see Jackson 5, they would be going to see Micheal Jackson. He would not break out with his performances until his solo career. It was not till the late 1970s to early 1980s where Micheal would go solo with his music. One of the most iconic music videos of all time is Thriller. Which ended up sealing MTV's reputation in the music industry. Micheal Jackson blew up in fandom after the music video and album were released. Thriller was the best-selling album of all-time in the U.S.  After thriller, Micheal released his next album labeled as "Bad". Which stirred up some contro

New Age Brazilian Music

New Age Brazilian Music "Bossa No Se" -Cuco, 2019 " Lo Que Siento" - Cuco, 2017     Brazilian music is some of the most diverse music in the world. It has about 18 different styles of music. One of the styles of Brazilian music that I will be talking about today is called Bossa Nova. It is described as a "different beat". Bossa Nova introduced unconventional chords with altered harmonies. The style is mainly characterized by the Samba. Which is another style of Brazilian music that is one of the most important cultural phenomena. Both styles of music stem from Afro-Brazilian communities. These two styles of Brazilian music are what characterizes the music of Brazil the best.     In recent years there has been a resurgence of Brazilian music in American culture. One of the artists that are at the front lines of this resurgence goes by the name Cuco. He is at the age of 22 with his first hit being Lo Que Siento. Which was released soon after he graduated h

The Innovations of Queen

The Innovations of Queen Queen, 1970, London, United Kingdom      In the late 1960s, rock n roll started to go through some drastic changes. Who were the frontrunners of these drastic changes to rock you might ask? Well, Queen is one of the top rock bands to innovate music in their time period. Which was technically from the 1970s to the 1990s. They were able to innovate music changing the very concept of a rock n roll band can do. Now two songs come into mind with how Queen was able to innovate music. The first is known as the greatest song of its generation. Which is "Bohemian Rhapsody" . You cannot talk about Queen and its innovation of music without talking about Bohemian Rhapsody. Now the second song I can talk about can be any one of Queen's greatest hits. Which is there is a vast majority I can choose. I ended up choosing one of the most unique song  "We Will Rock You" . These two songs were able to innovate music quite drastically.     Bohemian Rhapsody

Music Analysis #2

New Faces v2- A Musical Analysis New Faces v2- Mac Miller, 2014, USA          One of my all-time favorite rappers will always be Mac Miller. I have been listening to his music since he released one of his first mixtapes K.I.D.S. Which is an acronym for "kicking incredible dope shit." I could not stop playing this mixtape when it first was released. My favorite song on it is "Nikes On My Feet" . I even bought blue suede shoes just because of this song! It is still one of my all-time favorite songs to this day. From Spotify's Wrapped 2020, I played "Nikes On My Feet" for over 6,202 minutes. Plus, Mac Miller was my #1 artist for the year. But my favorite song by Mac Miller you cannot access on Spotify. It is on Mac Miller's, what I would say, best album/mixtape of his career. Which is known as "Faces". The reason this mixtape is not on Spotify, or any other streaming service, is quite wholesome. Mac wanted this mixtape to be accessible to e
